About this Module
This module provides a comprehensive foundation in physical and sensory accessibility in the built environment. Participants will explore universal design, ADA compliance, and accessibility strategies for individuals with physical, visual, auditory, cognitive, and age-related needs. A university campus accessibility audit will serve as a case study, with in-person visits to assess real-world applications and challenges. The overall purpose of the course/module is to grow participant awareness of the need for building sites to accommodate the needs and facilitate the autonomy of persons with disabilities. The goals are to have participants learn the importance of building site designs for persons with disabilities, to increase their awareness of the visual, auditory, and tactile aspects of urban design, and to recognize the architect as a therapist.
The aims are to have participants conduct a site audit, conduct person-environment audits, and prepare a conceptual framework for a master plan.
