This course explores evidence based instructional methods and strategies for teaching reading to students with various learning needs, including those with disabilities.

It emphasizes the principles of differentiated instruction and the science of reading. The course prepares participants to design and deliver effective, individualized reading interventions across the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

The course also addresses culturally responsive teaching, the use of assistive technology, and collaboration with families and professionals to support student success. Participants will also have an understanding of Dyslexia and related disorders.

Through practical applications, case studies, and guided lesson planning, participants will examine how to assess students’ reading levels, interpret assessment data, and apply instructional techniques that support literacy development in inclusive and specialized settings.

 

Course Lenght: 4 weeks

 

Please note:

 

  • The course comprises lectures, home assignments, mid term and end of semester assignments.
  • Students earn 2 credits for SPED 302. spend 6 hours each week on this course in a mixture of faculty led teaching learning (1 hour) and student- directed learning (2 hours) on review or recommended readings and home assignments.
