This foundational course in special education law introduces the student to the legislative and legal frameworks that guide special education advocacy and delivery at the international, regional, and national (student’s country) levels.  It explains the linkages and demarcations between advocacy and the law, and between the law and special education delivery. The course is intended to provide newcomers to special education with a strong grounding in the relevant legislative and legal frameworks that govern individual, organisational, and societal design and delivery of special education, touching on the rights of persons with special needs and the responsibilities of their caregivers, education providers and the state. 

 

This course develops an awareness, and comparative history of special education law internationally, regionally and nationally. It will examine regulatory, statutory case law applicable to the local country situation and offer solutions and remedies for implementation.  Students will become able advocates in the area of persons with disabilities, non-discriminately.

 

Please note:

 

  • The course comprises lectures, assignments, as well as formative and summative assessments respectively during. It is offered during a seven-week period of 32 clock hours.
  • Students will earn two (2) semester credits(4.57 clock hours weekly)  consisting of both teacher and student directed learning inclusive of classwork, group work, and required and/or recommended readings and assignments.
