This course provides an introduction to Social Work as it relates to Special Education. The course intends to provide newcomers to Social Work with a strong baseline of information. The course enables the students / participants to engage fully in various dimensions and levels of Social Work, to build on the knowledge base in terms of knowledge, skills and attributes.
Course content:
- A definition/ description of Social Work and its contribution to general and societal development.
- The history of Social Work at the global and national levels.
- Social work policy, practices, principles. - grounding in legislation at the international, regional, and national levels…imperatives and implications for persons with special needs, for providers and caregivers.
- Qualities of the Social Worker and its implications to social work practice
- Examination of Social Work in different disciplines / fields.
- Examination of Social Work within the Special Needs Population
- Strength and Needs Assessment in Social Work, it's relevance and application to the Special Needs/ Special education population
Social work in groups
- Family team meeting: It's meaning; dynamics of FTM and its application to Special Needs population
- Family Group Conference: Definition/ Dynamics of FGC...it's application/ relevance to Special needs population

Please note:
- The course comprises lectures, home assignments, mid term and end of semester assignments.
- Students earn 2 credits for SPED 302. spend 6 hours each week on this course in a mixture of faculty led teaching learning (1 hour) and student- directed learning (2 hours) on review or recommended readings and home assignments.
