Dr. Lionel N. A. Matthews, PhD

Dr. Lionel N. A. Matthews, is a highly qualified sociologist and researcher with extensive experience in teaching, research, and administration. With a diverse set of research interests including marital satisfaction, adolescent sexuality, sociology of religion, African American health, and race relations, Dr. Matthews brings a wealth of knowledge to the classroom.


Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Matthews has held various teaching positions at Andrews University, where he served as Emeritus Professor, Professor of Sociology, Associate Professor of Sociology, and Assistant Professor of Sociology. He has taught a wide range of courses, including Principles of Sociology, Race and Ethnic Relations, Research Methods, Gender Roles, Marriage and Family, Sociology of Religion, and Family and Domestic Violence.


In addition to his teaching roles, Dr. Matthews has demonstrated leadership in curriculum design and development, as well as in managing K-12 education systems. He has also been involved in overseeing dissertations and evaluating dissertation defenses.


Dr. Matthews has published numerous articles and books, highlighting his expertise in areas such as moral values, marital satisfaction, ethnic tolerance, and health behaviors among African American Baptists. He has presented his research at various conferences, including the American Sociological Association convention.


With a Ph.D. in Sociology from Wayne State University, an M.S. in Counseling from Indiana State University, and a B.S. in Sociology from the University of Guyana, Dr. Matthews is a dedicated educator and researcher. His professional memberships include the Association of Christian Teachers of Sociology, the Association for the Scientific Study of Religion, and the American Sociological Association.


He will be teaching SEN Philosophical Foundations—Sociology.
